The symptoms of COVID 19, may persist after the disease and being discharged. Up to 15% of the patients who have had the condition develop persistent symptoms weeks or even months after the initial infection.
The symptoms of POST COVID syndrome are multiple and varied including extreme tiredness, loss of memory and concentration, insomnia, depression and anxiety, digestive disorders (loss of taste and smell), weight loss, hair loss, sense of shortness of breath, muscle and joint pain among many others.
A patient is considered to have POST COVID syndrome when symptoms persist after 4 weeks of the primary diagnosis. These symptoms make it difficult for the patient to return to daily activities, both at work and at family and recreational levels.
The British Hospital has opened its Post COVID Recovery Unit. It is aimed at all those patients who, after having COVID 19, show persistent symptoms that affect their usual functional capacity and / or their life quality.
This unit is multidisciplinary, in consultation with doctors with experience in assisting patients with COVID 19 and in close consultation with multiple specialties (physiotherapy / rehabilitation, mental health, pulmonology, cardiology, nutrition).
The objective is to give a comprehensive and holistic approach to the care of the patient with POST COVID syndrome and thus address the persistent symptoms of this new paradigm of disease.
We are convinced that only from a comprehensive and multidisciplinary medical perspective can we understand the complexity of persistent COVID-19 and help our patients to overcome this stage.
