DENGUE

Recommendations for those people who have recently traveled abroad.

In the Americas region and especially in some of the countries that Uruguayans mostly choose for their vacation such as Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, in recent months there has been an increase in cases of mosquito diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. Although today in Uruguay the reports of cases both autochthonous (originated in the country) and imported, are few, the existence of the transmitting mosquito (Aedes aegypti) throughout the National territory, predisposes to the transmission of both dengue and of chikungunya at the population level. Thus, from the British Hospital we suggest some recommendations for those who have traveled, to follow during 15 days after entering the country.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

– Medical consultation as soon as possible in the presence of some symptoms such as: fever or feverish sensation, headache, retro-ocular pain, muscle and/or joint pain, skin rash, diarrhea or abdominal pain. It´s essential for a diagnostic orientation to inform the health personnel about the travel history.

– If the medical condition allows it, limit daily community activities, and if possible contact health personnel from your home.

– In case of symptoms suggestive of dengue, do not self-medicate. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen. The best thing to do is to consult a doctor to indicate the appropriate treatment.

– Avoid mosquito bites using repellent and evaporable thermos tablets during the mentioned period and/or while you have symptoms.

Take into account that: a high level of suspicion considering clinical manifestations with a recent history of travel is essential for early diagnosis and timely treatment.
