Why should we wash our hands often? Usually, germs are so small that we are not able to detect them. Most germs are “good”, however, some kinds of them can cause diarrhoea, flu or even more serious problems which could threaten our lives. Washing our hands correctly reduces the possibility of spreading germs which reach our bodies through the nose, mouth or injuries. According to the Prevention and Illness Control Centre, washing hands is the best way we have to avoid disseminating infections. When should we wash our hands? Before: Preparing or eating foods Dealing with an injury or with a sick person Putting or removing contact lenses After: Using bathroom Dealing with raw foods (specially meat, chicken or fish) Changing diapers Sneezing or coughing Dealing with rubbish Attending a sick or injured person Handling animals or animal feces How should we wash our hands? The way you wash your hands is as important as the frequency. Rinsing hands quickly under water is not enough to eliminate germs. You should use soap and warm water. All the hand surfaces must be washed, wrist, palm, fingers and nails. Take at least 10 or 15 seconds to wash your hands. Use clean and disposable towels to dry your hands. Do not rub your hands to avoid cuts or injuries.
