People with white skin, blonde hair, redheads, with freckles or light brown, blue eyes, green or grey are at highly risk of getting skin cancer. Children need protection not only for their sensitive skin but also because they have many years ahead to receive damage from solar radiation. It is also important to bear in mind that they stay much more time outdoors than adults. Most sun exposure of a person in the entire life occurs before the age of 18, from an average of 80%. It is important that children start sun protection from an early age as part of their daily routine, as simply brushing their teeth. Suggestions: -Reduce to the minimum sun exposure between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. It is recommendable to schedule outdoor activities early in the morning or at sunset. -Avoid at any time children under 6 months direct exposure to the sun and the use of sun protection before 6 months of age. -After six months of age it is important to start sun protection with sunscreens. -Sun screen lotion decrease the intensity of ultraviolet (UV) rays but it do not protect in a 100%. -Make sure that sun protection factor (SPF) is 30 or higher and high UVA. - Sunscreen should be applied half an hour before sun exposure and must be reapplied every 3 hours. It also must be applied after intense sweating, swimming, bathing or towel drying. -Add photo protection using a wide-brimmed hat (casting shadow over the face) and clothing in dark colors. - Use black sunglasses with UV protection. -Remember that the parasol does not provide complete protection and that part of the ultraviolet radiation that we receive comes from the sun reflecting surfaces such as sand, water and pavement. -If the skin shows irritation after applying sunscreen ask your doctor. - Skin tanning does not guarantee protection and sunscreens should be applied apart from it. Sun damage occurs with each sun exposure and is accumulated throughout life. -Control spots and in case of changes of size, color or shape, ask your doctor.
