Paris is one of the most influential cities in the world but during the days of the Second Empire it was the prototype of modernity.
In the period between the failed revolutions of 1848 and 1871, the city underwent a great transformation. Baron Haussmann replaced its medieval layout with grand boulevards, and the unstoppable social and physical changes also brought about cultural changes that marked the 19th century and prefigured the 20th.
The talk "Paris, Capital of Modernity" analyzes urban changes and relates them to the appearance of a poet like Baudelaire, a typical figure like the flâneur, the desires of Madame Bovary and even to that likeable character who, thanks to Poe, was born in Paris to later conquer the whole world: the detective.
